Goulds Farm - About Us

Goulds Farm has been owned by the Wright family for over four decades. In that time it has farmed a variety of animals including sheep and cows but its main historical connection was with pigs. However, due to the financial constraints and geographical nature of the farm, this was deemed as a loss making activity a long time ago. The decision was made to transform the farm and the farm land into other uses. A massive woodland plantation program was undertaken to transform the valley into a wooded haven for wild life and bird life. Such is the extent of the transformation that a herd of deer are now resident in the woodlands and the bird population has grown significantly and now includes breeding owls. However, you will be very lucky to see these animals as they are reclusive but the owls are at least very vocal in the night times.

The transformation and its impact on the environment is such that otters were spotted in the valley for the first time in decades last year. As the author Henry Williamson wrote the book 'Tarka the Otter' in a house only a mile away, it is more than a befitting comeback for a very reclusive and miss understood animal. The aim of the Wright family now is to derive an income from responsible and environmentally friendly tourism, especially encompassing youth and school groups whilst promoting the outstanding natural beauty of the area.
